Czech Republic, 107 minutes

Dir: Petr Zelenka (Buttoners)

Winner — Czech Lion, Best Supporting Actor

A film rich with dark, sarcastic humor, Wrong Side Up is directed by Petr Zelenka, and is based on his own award winning Czech play, Tales of Common Insanity.

The story focuses on Petr Hanek, a goofy but endearing man stuck in a dead-end job at the Prague airport. He spends his days trying to reclaim his ex-girlfriend, Jana, who broke up with him and is about to marry a wealthier man. Odd characters abound in Petr’s life, including his obsessed mother, his father who was the voice of Communist-era newsreels and is now having an affair with a young sculptor who is fascinated with his past, and his neighbors who pay Petr to watch them have sex.

Wrong Side Up is a wry, entertaining comedy of manners populated by people longing to connect with each other.
