Danila, a baby-faced young hoodlum, arrives in St. Petersburg, Russia, fresh out of the army and goes to work for his brother Viktor, who runs a murder-for-hire business connected to the feuding Russian mafia. By the end of the film, Danila, sleepy-eyed and obsessed with a mediocre Russian rock band named Nautilus, has cut a lethal swath through the city's underworld and is ready to move on to greener pastures: Moscow. Coolly efficient as a killer, Danila emerges as both the most deadly and the most morally consistent character in a world where loyalty counts for little and brute force rules. Just as it did for Hollywood directors during the Depression, the era of Cagney and Raft, the gangster genre in the 1990s allows Russian Director Aleksei Balabanov to deal with the political and personal issues of a devastated society while paying due attention to action and drama.
