Youssou N'Dour and the Grand Orchestre du Caire at the Roll Back Malaria Concert
Category: World Music

During the nights of 12-13 March 2005 a remarkable musical event took place at the Iba Mar Diop Stadium in Dakar, Senegal. More than 150 of Africa's finest musicians gathered in front of 50,000 African spectators to perform and promote the Roll Back Malaria campaign, under the leadership of the Senegalese superstar Youssou N'Dour.

In this film, director Martin Meissonier captured N’Dour’s inspired and heartfelt performance – one of the festival’s truly shining moments. Alongside the Grand Orchestre du Caire, N’Dour played music from his groundbreaking CD “Egypt,” which brought African and Egyptian musicians together to create a testament to Senegalese Sufism.

N'Dour dreamed of Africa Live as a celebration of the vitality and creativity of Africa. Media show us that AIDS, economic struggles and droughts are killing the largest continent ... and the reality is tough. But there is also another side of Africa. The energy, youth, beauty, modernity and creativity of Africa are often unrecognized by the West.
